Creating a Sustainable Tourism Region in Aso City
We have been working to create a world-class sustainable tourism area in Aso.
Aso City has been certified as a Global Agricultural Heritage Site in May 2013, certified as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2014, certified as one of the world’s top 100 sustainable tourist destinations in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, we won the Japan Tourism Agency’s Sustainable Travel AWARD Grand Prize.
In response to the adoption of the Japan Tourism Agency’s sustainable tourism promotion model project in 2023, we are working to create a sustainable tourism area in Aso City, aiming to balance the natural environment, lifestyle, and tourism.
To improve the sustainability of tourism in Aso City, we have been working on formulating the “Sustainable Tourism Region Development Action Plan ver.1”.
Starting in September 2023, we have invited experts with knowledge of sustainable tourism to hold a total of four lectures and GSTC training. Based on the training content, we built a regional system to promote understanding of sustainable tourism and promote sustainable tourism. Furthermore, we held a hearing on the current state of accommodation facilities in December, and an individual consultation meeting for accommodation facility operators in January 2024.Based on the results, we have now created an action plan ver.1 focusing on accommodation facility operators.
We hope that everyone visiting Aso, citizens, and businesses to read this action plan.. This council will continue to formulate action plans that work together with the region for next year and beyond.
